US Imposes Approximately 260% Tariffs on Chinese Trailers
On October 28, the US Department of Commerce determined that large volumes of imported Chinese trailers have injured domestic US production, and therefore decided to impose approximately 260% tariffs on certain Chinese trailers. The US International Trade Commission, composed of bipartisan members, ruled that so-called "van semi-trailers" are entering the US market through "dumping," meaning they are imported at extremely low prices, making it difficult for US domestic manufacturers to compete.
According to the announcement published in the US Federal Register, the measures took effect on Wednesday and include both anti-dumping and countervailing duties. The US Trailer Manufacturers Coalition, a group of US companies that filed the investigation request, estimates that approximately 40% of van semi-trailers on the US market originate from China, Mexico, or Canada. These tariff measures will remain in effect for at least five years.
Chris Hammond, Executive Vice President of trailer manufacturer Great Dane, stated: "Twenty years ago, there were about 20 different trailer manufacturers in the US, but with the entry of foreign competitors, now there are basically only six left. They have systematically squeezed out these companies year after year."
US manufacturers have already begun seeking to capitalize on the opportunities brought by these measures. Bob Wahlin, CEO of Stoughton Trailers, stated that the company plans to add 500 to 700 employees in the US within the next six months. The company currently has fewer than 2,000 employees. Sources familiar with the company's plans revealed that Stoughton, headquartered in Wisconsin, also plans to make USD 26 million in capital investments, which is expected to create thousands of trailer manufacturing jobs.
A separate investigation targeting trailers imported from Mexico and Canada is expected to conclude in early 2027.
China has repeatedly emphasized that the relevant US practices violate basic economic laws and market principles, breach World Trade Organization rules, and undermine the multilateral trading system.
