According to the latest data from the National Energy Administration, as of the end of September this year, the total number of electric vehicle charging infrastructure units (guns) in China reached 24.777 million, a year-on-year increase of 37.2%. Of these, public charging facilities (guns) totaled 5.207 million, up 16.3% year-on-year, while private charging facilities (guns) reached 19.570 million, up 44.0% year-on-year. China has built the world's largest charging network.
However, behind the massive numbers, structural challenges remain prominent, including supply-demand mismatch, scenario differentiation, and operational maintenance shortcomings. Charging anxiety is no longer a question of "whether charging piles exist," but rather a structural contradiction of "whether one can charge nearby, charge quickly, charge stably, and charge during peak hours."
On the highway service area charging infrastructure front, the national highway charging pile coverage rate has exceeded 90%, essentially achieving full coverage of major trunk highways. Meanwhile, the promotion and application of super-fast charging technology is accelerating, with over 50,000 supercharging stations built nationwide, supporting vehicle charging completion within 15 to 20 minutes and significantly improving the long-distance travel experience.
The China Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Promotion Alliance stated that the next phase will focus on advancing charging facility construction in rural areas and older residential neighborhoods, while accelerating the development of a supplementary energy network centered on super-fast charging. It is expected that by year-end, the national charging pile inventory will exceed 12 million units, further optimizing the vehicle-to-pile ratio to a reasonable level.
